Gold and bronze for Belgians in time trial at cycling world championship

We got first and third place at the Olympics, and now, at the world cycling championships in Rwanda, Belgium did it again.

He was the absolute favourite; it was his race to lose. Remco Evenepoel has taken the time trial world championship title for the third year in a row, a feat achieved only by Michael Rogers and Tony Martin before him.

Compatriot Ilan Van Wilder kept the hotseat warm for him, putting down the stellar time of 52:22 over the 40.6-kilometre course in and around Kigali. Only Australian Jay Vine did better than him, but even he was 1:46 than the Belgian aerodynamic sensation, who managed to complete the course in just 49 minutes and 46 seconds.

If there was any doubt as to his superiority in this discipline, it was surely erased when he overtook the ever-dominant Tadej Pogačar, a move that international media have called “humiliating” for the Slovenian phenomenon.

We might be thinking a little far ahead, but if he manages this feat again next year, not only will Remco come on equal footing with legends in the discipline Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara, who have each had four wins, he will make history by winning it four times in a row. Can you tell that we’re fans?
