Archaeologists have stumbled upon a whole host of remarkable historical remnants dating back to the time of Emperor Charles V in Ghent.
The beautiful city of Ghent in the province of East Flanders holds many secrets, but even the secrets of history can be uncovered. Archaeologists excavating in preparation for the construction of apartments in this lovely ancient town have found numerous objects of tremendous historical value on the site of the old Spanish castle built by Charles V to keep a close eye on the people of Ghent following an uprising.
The archaeologists have uncovered what they believe may have been the living quarters of Spanish soldiers, citing traces of their presence as well as “beautiful artefacts.” Another such discovery is the castle’s cesspool, which one archaeologist has called a veritable treasure trove, with the team sparing no effort to conserve as many discoveries as possible in the run-up to construction.
In addition to the artefacts, they found objects such as bowls, remnants of wine bottles, old building materials and signs pointing towards a prehistoric presence. There is more of the castle to uncover, but who knows what other remarkable secrets might be hiding underneath our beautiful Belgian cities?
Golly, do we feel our inner Indiana Jones itching with excitement!
