The story of Baldur’s Gate 3, a popular award-winning video game made by a Belgian studio, is being turned into a series on HBO.
Developed by Larian Studios in Ghent, the game became a global hit thanks to its rich storytelling, memorable characters and deep player choice. It swept major international awards, including Game of the Year across the Golden Joysticks, D.I.C.E. Awards, BAFTAs and The Game Awards — a rare achievement attributed to its strong narrative, design and performances. Baldur’s Gate 3 is set in the broader universe of Dungeons & Dragons, a popular role-playing board game.
It caught the interest of Craig Mazin, who also made the wildly popular HBO series based on the video game The Last of Us. Mazin played Baldur’s Gate 3 for a good thousand hours, he’s stated, and has praised Larian CEO Swen Vincke’s take on the D&D universe. Vincke in turn praised his company, whose staff “worked incredibly hard on making Baldur’s Gate 3 worthy of its legacy. Its characters and narratives are the result of many teams working together.” And who better to carry on the legacy than a superfan with a hit series under his belt?
Baldur’s Gate 3 seems to be the Belgian gift that keeps on giving. We are so excited to see the end result, and are curious what Larian Studios has in store for the future.
