17th century Belgian female artists highlighted in exhibition in Ghent

Some of the greatest female artists of the lowlands are being highlighted in an exhibition in the Ghent museum MSK.

Chances are you’ve heard about famous Flemish artists like Jan Van Eyck, Pieter Brueghel and Peter Paul Rubens, but what about names like Clara Peeters, Maria Faydherbe and Johanna Vergouwen? These are just three of dozens of female artists from the lowlands whose work is on display in the exhibition Unforgettable: Women artists from Antwerp to Amsterdam, 1600–1750. All three were born in Belgium and have produced terrific works of art which will be shown from 7 March to 31 May.

Through this exhibition, Ghent’s MSK (Museum voor Schone Kunsten) hopes to contribute “to a more complete narrative of the art history of the Low Countries,” and to show these female artists’ influence today, preserving and reinforcing their legacy.  Visitors can discover the circumstances that enabled and informed their work and discover a whole new world of captivating works of art.

The exhibition continues the line of MSK Gent’s research into women artists. The perfect excuse to take a day trip to Ghent!
