In her last junior tournament, the 17-year-old Bruges native defeated Sweden’s Lea Nilsson in the final to give Belgium its 11th Grand Slam junior singles victory.
At the age of 17, New York was Jeline Vandromme’s last major event in the junior ranks before she goes up against the world’s top tennis players on the WTA circuit.
In the final of this year’s US Open Junior tennis tournament, the young Bruges player faced Sweden’s Lea Nilsson, winning in two sets (as in previous rounds) 7-6, 6-2.
She becomes the first Belgian junior to win a Grand Slam tournament since An-Sophie Mestach at the Australian Open in 2011, and the first player to triumph at the US Open since Kirsten Flipkens in 2003.
This was an extraordinary performance for the Bruges native, as she had previously never progressed beyond the quarter-finals in a Grand Slam. Jeline Vandromme, paired with Lithuania’s Laima Vladson, also reached the doubles final (losing 6-2, 6-2 to Czech sisters Jana and Alena Kovackova).
Belgium hopes that this young player will continue to shine on the professional circuit!
