Sara Top, a researcher at Ghent University, has received the Young Scientist Conference Award, extended by the European Meteorological Society (EMS) at a recent International Conference on Urban Climate.
Top is the beneficiary of a scholarship from the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO), something which few researchers have the honour of receiving. Her research involves close collaboration with the Royal Meteorological Institute. It explores the use of machine learning – a subset of artificial intelligence – to produce detailed climate data related to European cities.
It’s not the first time Sara Top has been recognised for her research. For example, together with some colleagues, she had set up a citizen science project in which a good 70 schools across the Flemish region of Belgium set up local weather stations to monitor the weather in different types of environments.
We applaud this Belgian researcher with a promising future in meteorology. We’re sure Ms. Top had her head in the clouds for a while there.
