His name is Tobe Decraene, he’s a 21-year-old Belgian, and he’s just been voted MVP of the Ultimate Frisbee championship weekend.
His team, Boston Glory, defeated Minnesota Wind Chill in the final, and with 7 assists and a goal, our compatriot played a crucial role in the 17-15 victory. Perhaps even more noteworthy were his 9 assists and one goal in the semifinal.
Decraene said after the match that he was speechless, called the MVP title surreal and underlined that he owes it to the team, so you could say that he is not only the most valuable but also most humble player. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it’s not his first distinction: Tobe was voted Rookie of the Year in 2024 and has become European champion with the Belgian national team before that.
You can read about that European title on this page of your favourite website of all things Belgian. The national team at that time has been compared to the golden generation of Red Devils (the male national football squad), and it certainly seems like Tobe Decraene fits such a superlative with all his accomplishments so far.
There’s something about watching this young Belgian play that makes us want to throw a frisbee around. How about you?
